Abstract
Objectives£ºThe aims of this study were to describe the demographic, clinical and criminal characteristics in manic patients by the presence of homicide, and to examine the risk factors underlying the crime.

Method£ºA total of 190 manic patients were enrolled. Patients were divided into homicide group (H group) and non-homicide group (NH group). All the information was collected by reviewing medical records and written records of prosecutors or police retrospectively.

Results£ºThe victims were more likely to be family members in H group than NH group (63.9% vs 10.4%, p<0.001). The victims in family members, especially parents or spouse, tended to highly express negative emotion towards patients at the time of crime. In NH group, the targets of crimes were more likely to be strangers. Impulsivity was more common motivation in NH group (67.3% vs 47.2%, p=0.007), while psychotic symptom in H group (44.4% vs 32.0%, p=0.007). In both groups, the rate of past criminal history was high, though higher in NH group than in H group (75.3% vs 50.0%, p=0.003).
Conclusion£ºNon-homicidal crimes were more prevalent in manic patients. However, the possibility of homicide should not be overlooked by the patients in manic phase
